Uganda Calls for Proper Funding of New AU Mission in Somalia

Gen. Odongo Jeje Abubakhar, Uganda’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, emphasized the critical need for immediate and comprehensive implementation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2719 to ensure funding for the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) starting January 1, 2025.

Speaking at a virtual ministerial meeting of the AU Peace and Security Council, he urged the AU Commission and the United Nations to develop a roadmap for resource mobilization to address the 25% funding shortfall for AUSSOM.

Gen. Abubakar also called for the need to organize a pledging conference to secure contributions from international partners.

This initiative is pivotal to sustaining AUSSOM’s mandate, particularly during its transition phase, as it works to stabilize Somalia and ensure peace and security in the region.
