UN Describes Humanitarian Situation in Somalia as “Extremely Dire”

The United Nations has described the unfolding humanitarian situation in Somalia as “extremely dire.”

A report by James Swan, the top UN Special Representative to Somalia, shows that the ongoing drought affects close to 4.3 million people.

Further, the report by Swan indicates that the drought has displaced roughly 270,000 individuals.

With low rains expected in April, the situation is likely to worsen.

Swan informed the UN Security Council (UNSC) that a “potential humanitarian catastrophe” awaits Somalia.

He called upon more donors to increase urgent humanitarian assistance to Somalia.

In Swan’s estimates, Somalia is the Horn of Africa country that drought has decimated more than any other.
