WHO Urges Somalis to Stop Stigma and Discrimination on Mental Health

The World Health Organization (WHO) has encouraged Somalis to stop the stigma and discrimination directed against people diagnosed with mental health challenges.

The organization made this call on October 11.

According to WHO, Somalis do not boast of a stellar reputation in the area of mental health with violence directed towards those diagnosed with this condition.

Furthermore, the organization urged the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) through the Ministry of Health to prioritize scaling up mental health facilities and services in the country.

WHO mentioned that success in this field requires support and involvement of all stakeholders.

In this regard, it mentioned international agencies, national agencies, policymakers, and civil society groups.

Moreover, WHO reminded Somalis that the problem could be on the verge of worsening, especially considering the humanitarian crises that have hit the country this year.

Currently, Somalis are grappling with the COVID-19 pandemic, locust invasion, and flooding.

All these challenges, added to the regular socioeconomic and health problems, are likely to have a huge mental effect on the people of Somalia.
