Close to half a million people in Somalia, Ethiopia, and Kenya are facing starvation.
Oxfam International stated this in a joint statement with the Save the Children organization on May 21.
In their report, the two global organizations state that the situation in the East African nations is quite disheartening.
Further, they have indicated that over 23 million people in the three nations face extreme hunger.
The situation is worsened by the fact that the East African region is currently experiencing one of its worst droughts in decades.
Rains have failed in consecutive seasons in the region.
Hundreds of thousands of people have been displaced from their homes in pursuit of food for their families and livestock.
Oxfam and Save the Children have added their voices to the growing calls for immediate intervention to prevent the situation from becoming dire.
