Ambassador Jibril and University Officials Explore Education Cooperation with Kenya

NAIROBI — A delegation led by the Chancellor of Mogadishu University, Dr. Ibrahim Mohamed Mursal, has paid an official visit to the headquarters of the Federal Republic of Somalia’s Embassy in Kenya, where they were warmly received by Somalia’s Ambassador to Kenya, Jibril Ibrahim Abdulle, and the First Secretary of the Embassy, Maardiya Mohamed Abdi.

The delegation also included the Deputy Chancellor for Planning and Quality Assurance, Abdiwale Sheikh Mohamed. The meeting focused on strengthening cooperation between Somalia and Kenya in the field of education, particularly in facilitating services and support for Somali students pursuing higher education in Kenya.

Ambassador Jibril emphasised that education is a crucial pillar of social development, and that the Embassy places special importance on strengthening cooperation between educational institutions in Somalia and Kenya, and facilitating services for Somali students studying in Kenya.

The meeting also underscored the importance of strengthening cooperation between universities and educational institutions in both countries, to create new opportunities for education, research and development, and to further improve the quality of higher education.

The meeting comes at a time when the Somali Embassy in Kenya has been particularly active in addressing educational challenges facing Somali students in Kenya. Kenya and Somalia signed a bilateral education agreement in May 2024, enabling Somali students with high school diplomas to access Kenyan universities. This agreement was signed between the education ministers of both countries and has facilitated greater educational mobility for Somali students.

The Somali Embassy has been actively engaged in strengthening bilateral ties, with Ambassador Abdulle hosting Kenya’s Deputy Speaker of the Senate to discuss inter-parliamentary cooperation and expanding trade relations between the two nations.

Ambassador Abdulle has also demonstrated commitment to education by attending the official opening of Starlight View Academy in Parklands, Nairobi, praising the school’s dedication to fostering an equitable learning environment for Somali children and the broader community.

Mogadishu University is one of Somalia’s premier institutions of higher learning, having celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2022 with a ceremony attended by Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre and other senior government officials.

Mogadishu University’s nursing degree has earned international recognition, with the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools (CGFNS) confirming that students who pursue the degree can join US institutions or employers without having to repeat the course.

Strengthening Education Cooperation

The visit is part of broader efforts to strengthen cooperation between educational institutions and diplomatic missions, with the Somali Embassy in Kenya committed to continuing its support for Somali students and advancing educational cooperation between the two countries.

The Joint Commission for Cooperation (JCC) has discussed improved cooperation between Somalia and Kenya, with education being one of the key areas identified for collaboration, alongside the blue economy, health, tourism, and agriculture.

Critical Note

While the meeting between the Mogadishu University delegation and the Somali Embassy reflects a commitment to strengthening educational ties, the challenges facing Somali students in Kenya remain significant. Issues such as the recognition of qualifications, access to financial support, and integration into the Kenyan education system require sustained attention from both governments.

The Embassy’s engagement with Kenyan educational institutions is a positive step, but it must be accompanied by broader efforts to improve the quality of education in Somalia itself. The Somali people, who have endured decades of conflict, deserve an education system that prepares their children for the future. The government must prioritise investment in education, ensure that resources reach the most marginalised communities, and address the underlying drivers of educational exclusion.
