MOGADISHU – The Banadir Regional Administration has officially welcomed Nadia Mohamed, the Mayor of St. Louis Park, Minnesota, upon her arrival in Mogadishu for an official visit. The reception, held at Aden Adde International Airport, underscores the growing ties between the Somali diaspora in the United States and the federal government.
Deputy Governor for Security and Politics of the Banadir Region, Mohamed Ahmed Diiriye (Yabooh), led the welcoming ceremony. He was joined by the Acting Speaker of the House of the People, Sadiya Yasin Haji Samatar, federal ministers, parliamentarians, federal and regional officials, and members of the public. The event also featured a cultural performance by the “Barbaarta Gaashaaman” troupe.
Mayor Mohamed, a Somali-American, made history in November 2023 when she became the first Black, first Somali, and first Muslim mayor of St. Louis Park. Her election was widely celebrated in Somalia as a milestone for the diaspora’s political achievements on the global stage.
Strengthening Diaspora and Transnational Ties
In his remarks, Deputy Governor Yabooh described the mayor’s visit as a step that strengthens the connection between Mogadishu and St. Louis Park. He noted that the visit highlights the importance of encouraging and honouring Somali citizens who achieve tangible success on the international stage.
The Deputy Governor also commended Mayor Mohamed for her historic achievement and expressed hope that she would continue to strengthen her leadership role and service to the community she represents. The visit is seen as part of broader efforts to engage the Somali diaspora in the country’s reconstruction and development.
The Somali government has been actively seeking to engage with its diaspora communities, with high-level officials holding talks in various countries to enhance the relationship between the Federal Government and Somalis abroad.
A Symbol of Diaspora Success
Mayor Mohamed’s visit is expected to include meetings with senior Somali leaders, including President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre. Her itinerary is likely to focus on strengthening transnational ties and exploring ways the diaspora can contribute to Somalia’s development.
The Banadir Region has been at the forefront of implementing local governance reforms, including the successful one-person, one-vote local elections in December 2025, which were hailed as a sign of democratic progress.
Way Forward
The official welcome of Mayor Nadia Mohamed to Mogadishu serves as a symbolic moment reflecting the growing influence of the Somali diaspora in the political and social spheres of their host countries. Her visit is expected to foster greater cooperation between the diaspora community and federal institutions, particularly in areas of mutual interest such as development, governance, and cultural exchange.
