MOGADISHU — Somalia’s National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA), operating with support from international partners, has conducted a planned operation in the Fidow area of the Middle Shabelle region, targeting a house where Al-Shabaab militants were reportedly sheltering .
According to a statement released by NISA, the operation successfully eliminated the militants who were inside the targeted house. However, the agency did not provide further details on the number of casualties, the identities of those killed, or the specific nature of the international support received .
The operation in Fidow is the latest in a series of intelligence-driven strikes targeting Al-Shabaab positions in the Middle Shabelle region. In July 2026, NISA forces eliminated eight Al-Shabaab militants, including two commanders, on the outskirts of the Basra area in Middle Shabelle. That operation struck a militant assembly point near the riverbank, killing the commander in charge of the group’s mine operations and the commander responsible for 107mm rocket attacks, along with six other members of his unit .
Middle Shabelle has been a particular focus of NISA operations, as the region has long been identified as a vital logistical pathway used by insurgents to transport fighters and explosives between remote hideouts and urban centers .
Pattern of Intelligence-Led Operations
NISA has conducted a series of coordinated strikes across the Middle Shabelle and Hiiraan regions, targeting the group’s media infrastructure and militant assembly points. In July 2026, operations resulted in the deaths of two senior Al-Shabaab propaganda operatives and 14 other militants, marking a tactical victory in the government’s ongoing counter-terrorism campaign .
In August 2026, NISA killed three Al-Shabaab commanders and seriously wounded senior leader Mustaf Caato in a planned operation in the Maxaas district of the Hiiraan region. Caato, who was the group’s overall commander for the so-called “fronts” in the Hiiraan region, had long been involved in planning and coordinating terrorist attacks .
NISA and international partners have also eliminated two senior commanders within the Khawaarij network in highly synchronized precision operations. In March 2026, strikes targeted critical leadership elements responsible for international terror coordination and domestic suicide missions. The operations eliminated Abdihamid Ali Abdullahi Maalim, who served as the primary link connecting the domestic insurgency with broader international terrorist syndicates, and Suleyman Omar Fidow, the supreme commander of the group’s suicide bomber divisions .
The Fidow area has been previously targeted by security forces. In January 2024, NISA killed seven Al-Shabaab militants in Fidow, with the operation also carried out with the assistance of international partners .
Critical Note
The operation in Fidow represents another tactical success in NISA’s ongoing campaign against Al-Shabaab, demonstrating the agency’s growing capacity to conduct intelligence-driven strikes with international support. However, the lack of detailed information from the agency raises questions about transparency and accountability in counter-terrorism operations. The limited disclosure of civilian protection measures and the absence of confirmation on the identities of those killed underscores the need for robust oversight mechanisms to ensure that military actions do not undermine public trust or fuel further instability.
While NISA has been effective in targeting high-value leaders and disrupting militant networks, the broader campaign against Al-Shabaab continues to face significant challenges. The group has demonstrated resilience, adapting its tactics and maintaining its ability to carry out attacks despite sustained military pressure . The government’s emphasis on military solutions, while neglecting governance and reconciliation, risks perpetuating a cycle of violence rather than breaking it.
