Mogadishu, Somalia — The Federal Government of Somalia has taken a decisive step toward strengthening identity management and public service delivery in the capital after senior officials convened to fast-track national identification and civil registration efforts.
Minister of Interior, Federal Affairs and Reconciliation Ali Yusuf Ali Hosh on Tuesday chaired a high-level meeting with Banadir Governor and Mogadishu Mayor Hassan Mohamed Hussein Muungaab, Somali Police Force Commander Major General Asad Osman Abdullahi, National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) Director General Abdiweli Ali Abdulle, and Abdikani Wehelie, Director General of the Civil Registration and Vital Statistics Directorate. Other key security and administrative officials were also in attendance.
The discussions centered on accelerating the rollout of national ID and civil registry systems across Banadir, with a strong emphasis on securing registration sites, protecting citizens’ data, and ensuring seamless cooperation between institutions.
Hosh underscored that a reliable identification framework is critical for governance, security, and economic inclusion. He urged all agencies to maintain strict coordination to guarantee transparency and public trust.
Police Commander Maj. Gen. Abdullahi pledged full security support during registration exercises, while Banadir authorities committed to mobilizing local administrations to facilitate citizen participation.
NIRA Director General Abdiweli Ali Abdulle highlighted ongoing efforts to digitize data systems, assuring that modern safeguards would be used to protect personal information.
The meeting concluded with a joint commitment to intensify implementation efforts in Mogadishu, positioning Banadir as a model region in Somalia’s broader national identification reform.
