President Hassan Sheikh Signs New Federal Constitution

MOGADISHU — The President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, H.E. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, has officially signed the new Federal Constitution into law. The landmark signing establishes a key legal framework for the nation’s governance following its recent ratification by both chambers of the Federal Parliament.

Implementation and Democratic Governance

Speaking to reporters at the Presidential Palace during the signing event, President Hassan Sheikh highlighted that the government will immediately commence implementing the new Constitution. He emphasized that the updated legal document will provide a robust basis for reinforcing government institutions, protecting citizens’ fundamental rights, and actively promoting the nation’s developing democratic system.

“Today concludes the extensive process of revising Somalia’s Federal Constitution, which has been provisional for some time and was recently approved by the Federal Parliament. With divine guidance, its implementation commences today,” stated the President.

High-Level Legislative Backing

The signing ceremony at Villa Somalia was attended by key parliamentary figures who oversaw the legislative drafting and review stages. The event was graced by the presence of the Speaker of the House of the People, Sheikh Aadan Mohamed Nur (Madobe), and the Speaker of the Upper House, Senator Cabdi Xaashi Cabdullaahi, along with the chairpersons of the Constitutional Review Committees.

According to officials, the formal enactment of the Constitution signals a decisive end to Somalia’s provisional era, setting the stage for significant structural reforms across all levels of the federal government.
