Deputy Lower House Speaker Campaigns to Amend New Elections Agreement

Abdiweli Sheikh Ibrahim Mudey, the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, has embarked on a campaign to convince Members of Parliament to amend the recently signed elections deal.

The House of Representatives (the Lower House) is scheduled to hold a joint parliamentary session with the Senate (the Upper House) to debate and approve the agreement between Federal Government of Somalia and Federal Member States.

The agreement is crucial for guiding Somalia as the country moves closer to the upcoming elections in 2020 and 2021. Somalia is to hold parliamentary polls in late 2020 before following that up with presidential elections in early 2021.

Nevertheless, it is not yet clear why Deputy Speaker Mudey is on the change-the-agreement campaign. The issues he is canvassing his parliamentary colleagues to amend are also unclear. Further, nobody knows if President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo is behind the move either.
