Ethiopia Won’t Cede Quest for Seaport Access Despite Row with Somalia

The ongoing row with Somalia will not make Ethiopia give up its quest for direct access to a seaport in the Horn of Africa region.

Ethiopia’s renewed commitment to gaining access to the sea reflects its strategic interests, given that it is a landlocked country.

Ambassador Nebiyou Tedla, the spokesperson for Ethiopia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, emphasized that Ethiopia is advancing its legal and diplomatic efforts to secure maritime access.

This move is part of Ethiopia’s broader agenda to enhance its economic and geopolitical positioning in the Horn of Africa.

Ethiopia’s interest in obtaining a port is likely tied to improving trade routes, reducing dependency on neighboring countries’ ports, and bolstering its economic growth.

The legal and diplomatic dimensions of this effort could involve negotiations with neighboring coastal countries like Somalia, Djibouti, or Eritrea.
