The Transport Committee of Somalia’s House of the People (Lower House) has condemned Mogadishu Port for forcing car owners to pay an overnight parking fee of $10.
This development forced the committee to summon two federal ministers to explain the reasons for the parking fee at the port.
On Thursday, it summoned the Minister of Transport, Fardowsa Osman Egal, and the Minister of Ports, General Abdullahi Ilko-Jiir.
Members of the committee wanted the ministers to address ongoing issues related to vehicle number plates.
Many newly imported vehicles are currently stranded at Mogadishu’s seaport because the transport ministry is yet to issue tthe necessary number plates, causing significant delays for vehicle owners.
This situation has led to widespread complaints, with owners being charged $10 per night for parking at the port, adding financial strain to an already frustrating process.
The committee’s intervention aims to resolve these issues and expedite the issuance of number plates.
