Ex-President Shariif Says Only Political Dialogue Can Save Somalia’s Democracy

Mogadishu, Somalia – Former Somali President and prominent opposition leader Sharif Sheikh Ahmed has warned that political dialogue — not broad consultation conferences — is the only viable path to safeguard Somalia’s fragile democracy.

Speaking amid growing uncertainty over President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s proposed national talks, Sharif emphasized that only direct political negotiations can address the escalating disputes surrounding the 2026 elections and controversial constitutional amendments.

“This is not the time for forums and symbolic gatherings. The only open room now to save Somalia’s democracy is through genuine political dialogue,” Sharif stated.

His comments come as the government prepares to launch talks aimed at resolving contentious issues between federal and regional leaders. Critics argue that the format of the proposed discussions lacks inclusivity and fails to guarantee consensus on key matters like electoral systems and the separation of powers.

Sharif’s remarks reflect mounting opposition skepticism, with many leaders questioning the President’s approach and warning of deeper political instability if critical issues are not addressed transparently and inclusively.
