MOGADISHU – The Military Court of the Somali Armed Forces has sentenced leader Idiris Mohamed Sheikh Mohamed, also known as Cabaas and Abu Mohamed, to life imprisonment after finding him guilty of membership in a terrorist organisation and involvement in conspiracies against Muslim civilians in Somalia.
The verdict, delivered on Monday, follows a lengthy legal process that began with Idiris’s arrest in the Mareer-guur area of Dhusamareb district on July 28, 2024. He was initially convicted by the First Instance Military Court on December 4, 2025, and sentenced to 15 years in prison on terrorism-related charges.
The military court’s decision to impose a life sentence followed an appeal by the Military Prosecutor’s Office, which argued that the initial 15-year sentence was insufficient given the severity of the charges. The prosecutor’s office had requested a harsher punishment for Idiris, who was accused of senior leadership roles within Al-Shabaab.
Charges and Allegations
According to the charges, Idiris was accused of being a member of Al-Shabaab’s Shura Council and of conspiring to harm Muslim civilians in Somalia. The prosecution alleged that he had been active in the group’s operations since the emergence of the Kharijites, serving in leadership capacities in the Diinsoor, Berdaale, and Baidoa districts, as well as in the Middle Shabelle region.
The military court has previously handed down severe sentences to Al-Shabaab members, including death penalties and life sentences for those convicted of involvement in the assassination of government officials and terrorist attacks against civilians.
Al-Shabaab commanders have been the target of sustained military and intelligence operations, with several senior leaders eliminated in joint operations across the country. However, the case of Idiris represents a rare instance of a senior commander being captured alive and brought to justice through the court system.
Arrest and Trial Process
Idiris was apprehended by Somali security forces in Mareer-guur, Dhusamareb district, as he attempted to move between the central and southern regions. He had been under surveillance by Somali intelligence agencies prior to his capture. After a comprehensive investigation, the Military Prosecutor’s Office requested that the case proceed to trial.
The First Instance Military Court initially convicted Idiris and sentenced him to 15 years in prison. However, the Military Prosecutor’s Office appealed the verdict, seeking a more severe penalty. The Supreme Military Court, which heard the appeal and provided both sides with a fair opportunity to present their arguments, ultimately overturned the initial sentence and imposed life imprisonment.
The military court has demonstrated a willingness to impose the maximum penalty on senior Al-Shabaab figures, reflecting the government’s determination to dismantle the group’s leadership and logistical networks.
The sentencing of Idiris to life imprisonment marks a significant milestone in Somalia’s judicial efforts to hold Al-Shabaab leaders accountable. The case highlights the growing capacity of Somali security and judicial institutions to apprehend, prosecute, and convict senior members of the militant group, despite ongoing security challenges. The verdict serves as both a deterrent to other Al-Shabaab operatives and a signal of the federal government’s commitment to the rule of law.
