SNA Commander Brigadier General Ibrahim Visits Ballidoogle to Oversee 12th Danab Commando Training Cohort

BALLIDOOGLE – The Commander of the Somali National Army, Brigadier General Ibrahim Mohamed Mahmoud, accompanied by senior military officers, conducted an official working visit to the Ballidoogle military base on Sunday, where he inspected the Colonel Hassan Tuure Military Training School and reviewed the progress of training for the 12th cohort of the elite Danab Commandos.

During the inspection, General Mahmoud toured the training facilities, assessed the readiness of the forces, and held discussions with instructors and trainees. The visit also included a review of the Danab Special Forces camps and the 161st unit of the 16th Commando Battalion, as part of broader efforts to strengthen the operational capabilities of Somalia’s most capable special forces unit.

The 12th group of Danab Commandos began their specialized training at the Colonel Hassan Tuure Military Training School in late May. The Danab (Lightning) Commandos, trained and equipped with support from the United States, have been at the forefront of the country’s counter-terrorism operations, conducting multiple high-intensity raids that have significantly degraded Al-Shabaab’s operational capacity.

Boosting Morale and Operational Readiness

General Mahmoud conveyed his congratulations to the officers and soldiers of the Danab units who were recently promoted to various ranks, urging them to redouble their efforts in fulfilling their national duties and defending the Somali people. The visit was part of a broader initiative to boost troop morale and ensure that the armed forces remain fully prepared for ongoing operations against extremist groups.

The Commander has previously visited injured soldiers in Mogadishu and conducted numerous frontline assessments, reflecting his commitment to the welfare and readiness of the troops. He has also travelled to Baidoa to accelerate military operations against Al-Shabaab, underscoring the military’s intensified focus on southern Somalia.

The Colonel Hassan Tuure Military Academy

The Colonel Hassan Tuure Military Training School in Ballidoogle, Lower Shabelle, has been a key site for training Somali forces to enhance their counter-terrorism and security operations. President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has previously presided over graduation ceremonies for DANAB officers at the same academy, underscoring the government’s ongoing commitment to strengthening Somalia’s security forces.

The Danab Commandos are often described as the country’s most disciplined and effective military unit, playing a critical role in high-risk operations against militant strongholds across the country. The federal government has also been investing in expanding military infrastructure, with a new Danab Special Forces base in Dhusamareb nearing completion.

Way Forward

The inspection of the 12th Danab training cohort at Ballidoogle forms part of the federal government’s broader strategy to professionalise the Somali National Army and enhance its capacity to assume full security responsibilities. The Danab forces continue to receive technical support and intelligence assistance from the United States and other international partners, reflecting sustained international commitment to building a self-reliant Somali military capable of securing the nation. As Somali forces intensify offensives against Al-Shabaab, the ongoing training of elite units remains central to the country’s counter-terrorism efforts and long-term stability.
