MOGADISHU: Residents in the Kaaraan district, specifically from the Mirinaayo neighborhood, held a rally in support of the Federal Government of Somalia and the nationwide direct electoral system. Demonstrators commended the administration’s efforts to improve security, resolve land disputes, and advance democratic reforms through the implementation of direct voting methods. Rally attendees highlighted that Kaaraan district has recently experienced improved security conditions and warned against any attempts to disrupt peace or create divisions between citizens and government authorities. Local residents also reiterated their endorsement of the electoral process, urging continued efforts to strengthen peace, social cohesion, and national progress across Somalia.
The rally in Mirinaayo came just days after a planned opposition demonstration in the capital failed to materialize amid a heavy security lockdown. Opposition groups had called for protests on May 10 over forced evictions and land disputes, but those gatherings were blocked after federal authorities deployed armored vehicles and troops across the city. Several opposition figures were prevented from reaching protest sites, and at least one fatality was reported when security forces dispersed small gatherings.
The Kaaraan rally reflected a contrasting narrative of public sentiment in the capital. Residents waved Somali flags and voiced confidence in the government’s security and political reforms, particularly the transition from decades of indirect clan-based voting to a one-person, one-vote system. The federal government has stated that it designated approved venues for public gatherings while preventing unauthorized protests that could have endangered public order. Authorities have accused opposition organizers of planning to hold rallies across 22 locations, a move they said would have overwhelmed security forces.
President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has championed universal suffrage as a historic break from the country’s traditional indirect electoral system. He praised the peaceful conduct of direct elections in South West State on May 10, calling them “a new chapter in Somalia’s history”. The president had invited the opposition Somali Future Council to a national consultative meeting on the same day, but opposition leaders set conditions for their participation, including a halt to government electoral activities and the appointment of an independent mediator.
The Kaaraan demonstration also highlighted improved security conditions in the district. Forced evictions and land disputes have become a central flashpoint in Mogadishu, with previous government-led demolition operations triggering armed clashes between rival security factions. Residents in Mirinaayo said they have witnessed a reduction in such tensions and credited the government’s security deployments for restoring a sense of safety. However, opposition figures have accused the government of using excessive force and have called for another protest scheduled for May 16, the day after President Mohamud’s term officially expires.
With the president’s four-year term set to conclude on May 15, the political atmosphere in Mogadishu remains tense. Opposition leaders have declared that President Mohamud will lose his legal authority after May 15 unless national elections are held or a constitutional alternative is agreed upon. Former President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo has also called for an inclusive electoral framework before the term ends, warning that a lack of consensus could trigger further instability. The Kaaraan rally, however, signaled that a segment of the capital’s population remains supportive of the government’s direction and its push for direct democratic reforms.
