Somali Government Registers Security Personnel Biometrically as Part of Reforms

The Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) has registered all security personnel in the country biometrically as part of ongoing reforms in the sector.

Mahdi M. Gulaid, the Deputy Prime Minister, made this revelation in the just concluded Somali Partnership Forum (SPF).

The forum took place on Monday, December 7.

Gulaid said that the biometric registration of the security personnel is part of the efforts by the government to “undertake essential and significant steps to reform the security sector.”

Furthermore, he said that the government is committed to making the security officers’ monthly and ration payments directly to their bank accounts.

He asserted that the days of using intermediaries to make these payments are long gone.

This year, the security personnel have notably taken to the streets, mostly in Mogadishu, to protest delays in receiving their salaries.
