NAIROBI – A high-profile reception was held in Nairobi to honour Somali referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan, who has gained international recognition following his historic selection for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, despite being denied entry to the United States.
The event, held at BBS Mall in Nairobi, was attended by thousands of members of the Somali community, business figures, and dignitaries. Among those present were Somalia’s Ambassador to Kenya, Jibril Abdulle Ibrahim; Wajir County Governor Ahmed Abdullahi; Kenya Football Federation President Hussein Mohamed; MPs Farah Maalim and Yusuf Hassan; BBS Mall Chairman Abdiweli Maalim; and other officials from Kenya, Somalia, and the sports community.
Artan was named the Confederation of African Football’s Men’s Referee of the Year for 2025, becoming the first Somali to reach the pinnacle of African refereeing. The recognition in Nairobi highlighted his historic achievement as the first Somali referee selected to officiate at a FIFA World Cup.
Kuwait Bestows Award of Excellence
Days after the Nairobi reception, Artan was honoured by the Kuwait Football Association with an Award of Excellence on June 30, in recognition of his achievements and contributions to international football. The 34-year-old described the award as a “generous honour” and a symbol of “invaluable trust.”

Artan thanked fans around the world for their support since the US entry debacle and expressed his commitment to delivering the “highest levels of performance” and “honouring Somalia” on the global stage. Following the award ceremony, he officiated the final of Kuwait’s Zain Premier League for the 2025–2026 season, in which Kuwait SC clinched the title after beating Al Qadsia SC. The match was attended by the Chairman of the Kuwait Football Association, Sheikh Ahmad Al-Yousef Al-Sabah.
The US travel restrictions on Somali nationals have been a significant obstacle for Artan, who was denied entry to the United States despite holding a valid visa, a diplomatic passport, and FIFA credentials. US officials cited “vetting concerns” as the reason for the denial.
From Entry Denial to Global Acclaim
Artan’s global prominence spiked after the US, one of the co-hosts of the FIFA World Cup, denied him entry to officiate at the tournament, which is taking place from June 11 to July 19 across Canada, Mexico, and the US. He was turned back at Miami International Airport, preventing him from making history as the first Somali referee to officiate at a World Cup.
The Somali government expressed deep regret over the decision, with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs describing Artan as a source of immense national pride. Despite the setback, FIFA has promised to pay Artan his full remuneration.
Historic Achievements
Born in Mogadishu in 1992, Artan started his career officiating in Somalia’s domestic leagues and became a FIFA-listed referee in 2018. He was the first Somali referee to oversee a CAF Champions League final, officiated at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, and was named Africa’s Men’s Referee of the Year for 2025 by CAF.
President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud congratulated Artan on his historic FIFA World Cup selection, describing it as a “valuable achievement” that “elevates the reputation of Somalia.”
Preparations for UEFA Super Cup
Omar Artan is now preparing to officiate the highly anticipated 2026 UEFA Super Cup final between Paris Saint-Germain and Aston Villa in Austria on August 12, at UEFA’s invitation. The appointment is viewed as a strong sign of confidence in Artan’s skill and professionalism, strengthening his place among football’s elite referees despite the controversy over his World Cup absence.
FIFA has previously invested heavily in Somali football development, granting the Somalia Football Federation $4.5 million through its Forward Development Programme, which has helped nurture talent like Artan and build the country’s sporting infrastructure.
Way Forward
As Artan continues to receive international recognition, his journey from a local referee in war-torn Somalia to the global stage serves as an inspiration for young Somali athletes. His resilience in the face of adversity and his ability to overcome barriers have made him a symbol of hope for the Somali people, proving that talent and determination can overcome even the most difficult obstacles.
