Somalia Sets National Secondary School Exam Dates

MOGADISHU: The Ministry of Education of the Federal Government of Somalia has officially released the schedule for the 2025 national secondary school final examinations, with nearly 40,000 students expected to sit for the tests nationwide next month.

Education authorities announced on Wednesday that secondary school students will sit for their final examinations from June 20 to June 25. Approximately 40,000 secondary school students from Federal Member States and the Banadir region are expected to participate in this year’s examinations. Last year, a total of 38,471 students sat for the 2024/2025 national secondary school exams across the country. In 2025, a record 39,382 students from all Federal Member States and Banadir participated in the Grade 12 National Examinations, reflecting growing confidence in Somalia’s public education system.

In a separate announcement, the Benadir Regional Directorate of Education earlier disclosed the schedule for Grade 8 examinations in Mogadishu. The administration confirmed that primary school students will sit for their exams from June 15 to June 18. In 2025, Mogadishu Mayor Hassan Mohamed Mungab inaugurated the Grade 8 National Exam, with a total of 41,639 primary school students participating across the Benadir region.

Education officials noted that the national examinations remain a critical component in strengthening Somalia’s education framework and ensuring standardized academic assessment nationwide. The government has been implementing significant reforms in the education sector. President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud officially inaugurated the 2025/26 academic year with a strong emphasis on teacher development and examination integrity, as part of a broader plan to raise the quality of learning and standardize teaching practices.

The Ministry has also prioritized teacher capacity-building. Final examinations were held for the first cohort of government-recruited teachers enrolled in a flagship two-year national training program, a milestone in the country’s education reform agenda aimed at closing the critical shortage of qualified teachers while modernizing pedagogical practices.

The examination system has seen notable improvements in recent years. Students in 39 towns across Somalia sat for the unified 12th grade National Exam, marking a significant milestone in the country’s education system. Officials have cited improvements in organization and wider participation of students nationwide, with plans underway to expand teacher training programs to reach more regions while improving examination systems to meet international standards.
