Sudanese Ambassador Briefs Somali Deputy Minister on Security Situation in Sudan

MOGADISHU – The Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Hassan Mohamed Ali (Nadaara), received the Ambassador of the Republic of Sudan to Somalia, Abdirahman Khalil Effendi, for talks focused on strengthening historical ties, expanding cooperation in areas of mutual interest, and exchanging views on regional and international developments.

The meeting underscored Somalia’s commitment to deepening political and economic cooperation with Sudan, highlighting the deep-rooted ties between the two peoples. Ambassador Effendi briefed the Deputy Minister on the latest security situation in Sudan and expressed gratitude for Somalia’s continued support for his country.

The meeting follows previous high-level engagements between Somali and Sudanese officials, including a meeting between Foreign Minister Abdisalam Abdi Ali and Ambassador Effendi in January 2026[reference:0]. On that occasion, the Sudanese envoy affirmed his nation’s complete support for the Federal Government and commended Somalia on the successful implementation of one-person, one-vote local elections[reference:1].

Bilateral Relations and Regional Cooperation

Both sides reiterated their determination to enhance cooperation and coordination on shared issues, reflecting the longstanding ties between the two brotherly countries. Somalia and Sudan share historical, cultural, and religious bonds, and have maintained diplomatic relations since Sudan’s independence.

Somalia and Sudan have recently agreed to waive visa requirements for all diplomatic passport holders, a landmark agreement finalised on April 2, 2026, during the second session of the Somalia-Sudan Political Consultative Committee in Mogadishu[reference:2]. The committee also discussed expanding political dialogue, forming robust economic partnerships, and launching joint educational initiatives[reference:3].

Support for Sudan’s Stability

The Deputy Minister reiterated Somalia’s commitment to supporting Sudan’s stability and sovereignty, aligning with the Federal Government’s broader foreign policy of standing in solidarity with brotherly nations facing challenges. Somalia has consistently supported Sudan’s unity and stability, particularly amid the ongoing conflict in Sudan that has displaced millions and caused a humanitarian catastrophe.

Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre has previously called for unity and peace in Sudan, during a meeting with Ambassador Effendi where he emphasised the importance of preserving Sudan’s security and stability and reaffirmed Somalia’s support for Sudanese-led solutions to the crisis.

Way Forward

The meeting concluded with both sides reaffirming their commitment to continuing dialogue and coordination on issues of common concern. The discussions reflect the importance both countries attach to maintaining strong bilateral ties and working together to address regional challenges.
