TPEC Says Only 172,874 Voters Took Part in May 25 Polls

The Transitional Puntland Electoral Commission (TPEC) has announced the number of voters who took part in the recent local government elections (LGEs) on May 25.

TPEC stated that only 172,874 of the 385,073 total registered voters took part in the exercise.

Consequently, TPEC reported that 133,562 of the voters failed to participate in the local council elections.

A bit of research by TPEC revealed some of the factors that forced others not to vote.

These include dissatisfaction with the preparations for and actual conduct of the elections and the long distance to the voting area.

Many of the voters also admitted to registering only for monetary benefits.

Several thousands were unable to vote due to poor weather, political disagreements, and lack of consensus.
