Turkish F-16s Spotted Over Mogadishu as Ankara Steps Up Military Support

MOGADISHU — Turkish F-16 fighter jets were observed performing low-altitude test flights over Mogadishu on Wednesday, signaling a significant upgrade in Ankara’s military engagement in the Horn of Africa.

According to knowledgeable sources, Turkey has deployed at least three fighter jets to Somalia, which reportedly arrived last Wednesday as part of an enhanced defence support package.

Evaluating Readiness

The recent test flights are understood to be aimed at evaluating the aircraft’s readiness and operational capabilities for future missions.

This deployment utilizes the infrastructure of the Turkish military base (Turksom) located on the outskirts of the capital. Established in 2017 at a cost of approximately $100 million, the facility serves as a central hub for training Somali military personnel and supporting national security operations.

Strategic Context: Energy and Security

While the official mission profile for the jet deployment remains unconfirmed, observers note that the move coincides with Turkey’s dispatch of oil exploration vessels to Somali waters.

Analysts suggest the air assets may be tasked with providing security cover for these maritime energy operations, in addition to reinforcing Somalia’s general defense capabilities against insurgent threats.
