WFP Installs Solar-Powered Cold Boxes in Shops in Somalia

The World Food Program (WFP) has installed off-grid solar-powered cold boxes in several shops in Somalia.

On February 26, WFP said that the decision was informed by the desire to reduce food loss and wastage.

According to WFP, 30 percent of the food produced each year is either lost or wasted.

Cold boxes would go a long way towards reducing the wastage and loss of food in Somalia.

Consequently, WFP contracted several businesspeople who own shops in the East African nation to allow installation of the cold boxes.

This way, WFP hopes to increase the availability of fresh produce in markets around the country.
