Somalia’s Controversial Federal Electoral Commission Elects New Chairperson

Somalia’s Federal Electoral Commission (FEC) has elected a new chairperson in a move that has attracted plenty of criticism from the opposition.

Mohamed Hassan was elected the Chairperson of the controversial electoral body on December 5.

Mowlid Matan was also elected as the Deputy Chairperson.

FEC has been under intense scrutiny after the country’s opposition claimed that the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) filled the body with civil servants and loyalists.

Jubbaland and Puntland are not represented in the poll body, whose membership includes officers from the National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA).

The decision by FEC to proceed with the election of its officials is likely to create further differences with politicians from the opposition.
