On April 13, 2025, 29 lawmakers from Somalia’s Federal Parliament representing Somaliland constituencies expressed concern over Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre’s speech in Las Anod.
In his address, the Prime Minister announced that Abdikhadir Ahmed Aw-Ali Firdhiye, leader of the SSC-Khatumo administration, is invited to the upcoming National Consultative Council (NCC) meeting scheduled for May 1–2 in Mogadishu.
The inclusion of SSC-Khatumo in national dialogues has been a contentious issue.
In May 2024, Firdhiye attended the NCC summit for the first time, where federal and regional leaders acknowledged the SSC region’s need for constitutional rights and praised its efforts to uphold Somalia’s unity.
However, Somaliland’s government has strongly objected to Somalia’s recognition of SSC-Khatumo, viewing it as an infringement on its claimed territorial integrity and a threat to regional stability.
The participation of SSC-Khatumo in federal affairs underscores ongoing tensions between Somalia’s central government and Somaliland’s self-declared independence.
While efforts for dialogue continue, the situation remains complex, with significant implications for Somalia’s political landscape.
