Somalia’s Agriculture Minister Outlines Farming Initiative During Community Gathering

MOGADISHU, Somalia – The Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation,  Mohamed Abdi Hayir Maareeye, held a community meeting today to discuss revitalizing the nation’s agricultural sector.

At the interactive forum, Maareeye presented the government’s strategic vision, highlighting food security and economic self-reliance as key priorities. He announced the development of a comprehensive National Agricultural Plan created with direct input from Somali farmers as essential stakeholders.

“As a government, we have created a national plan, and farmers are an integral part of how we will achieve this development. We cannot move forward without the people who work the land,” Maareeye told attendees.

The minister emphasized Somalia’s natural resource potential, challenging the perception of the country’s dependence on imports. He praised the quality of local produce, encouraging citizens to value and consume domestic products.

“The different crops that grow in our country are among the best in the world. From our fruits to our grains, the organic quality of Somali produce is unmatched globally, and we must capitalize on this,” he stated.

Throughout the meeting, the minister outlined support initiatives including modern farming equipment, quality seeds, and technical training to update traditional farming methods. He confirmed the government is addressing production barriers such as high energy costs and limited market access.

This engagement reflects a broader government effort to connect policymakers with the public, ensuring government services meet the actual needs of Somali citizens.
