Al-Shabaab remains a massive threat to democracy in Somalia.
The Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) has revealed the danger that the terrorist group poses to the country’s nascent democracy.
Ahmed Moalin Fiqi, the Minister of Interior and Reconciliation, accused the terrorist organization of being an “impediment” to democracy in Somalia.
He added that Al-Shabaab would make it hard for universal suffrage to work in the country.
“Al-Shabaab controls large parts of the country,” Fiqi said.
The huge area that is under Al-Shabaab’s control could be problematic when Somalia opts for the universal suffrage polls.
President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has already reassured the public that the country would go for one-person-one-vote (1P1V) polls in the next elections due in May 2026.
