The African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) is to reduce its troops in the East African nation to 14,626 in the second phase of the drawdown.
In Phase 1, ATMIS reduced its forces by 2,000 as of June 30, 2023.
In Phase 2, it intends to have a force of 14,626 troops. This would translate to a drawdown of up to 1,960 personnel.
ATMIS would implement the drawdown jointly with the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS).
Nevertheless, further drawdown would hinge on the findings of a Joint Technical Assessment.
Specifically, ATMIS and the Somali government would ensure that the drawdown takes into account the need to maintain the hard-won gains of the ongoing war on terrorism.
