Azerbaijan Ratifies Defense Cooperation Agreement with Somalia

Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev on Monday ratified the landmark “Agreement on Cooperation in the Field of Defense and Defense Industry” between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Federal Republic of Somalia.

Originally signed in February 2025, the agreement aims to deepen bilateral relations through enhanced collaboration in defense, military training, and joint industrial development.

The ratification marks a significant milestone in growing ties between the two countries, both of which have sought to expand their geopolitical partnerships in recent years.

According to Azerbaijani officials, the agreement will allow for knowledge exchange, joint exercises, capacity building, and possible arms production cooperation.

Somali officials welcomed the move, noting it supports Somalia’s ongoing efforts to modernize its national defense infrastructure amid regional security challenges.

The agreement is expected to open the door to further strategic partnerships and could play a role in boosting Somalia’s defense self-sufficiency while offering Azerbaijan a new foothold in the Horn of Africa.

Further details on implementation timelines and specific projects under the agreement are expected in the coming months.
