The Democratic Party for Change (DPC), led by former Finance Minister Mohamed Aden Ibrahim Farkeeti, has strongly condemned recent accusations by Southwest State branding the party as a “rebel movement.”
At a press conference held in Mogadishu on Monday, DPC spokesperson and Member of Parliament (MP), Mohamed Abdi Hamid, dismissed the allegations as “unfounded and an abuse of power by an illegal regime.”
“This is not just an attack on our party—it is an attack on Somalia’s democratic future,” said MP Hamid. “Labeling opposition parties as rebels is a dangerous precedent and reflects the desperation of those who fear legitimate political competition.”
The statement comes amid growing political tensions between opposition groups and state-level authorities, with DPC accusing the Southwest administration of targeting dissenting voices through smear campaigns and intimidation.
DPC has vowed to continue its political activities peacefully and within the framework of the law, calling on the federal government and the international community to take note of what it described as “increasing authoritarianism” in some Federal Member States. The Southwest State has yet to publicly respond to DPC’s remarks.
