Alliance of Somali Civil Society Organizations has faulted the Federal Government of Somalia for the formation of two crucial bodies; that is, Judicial Service Commission (JSC) and the Somali Petroleum Authority (SPA).
The alliance released a press statement stating that the formation of these state organs had to be done “in a legal manner.” It expressed shock at the manner in which the government formed such vital institutions.
Further, the alliance indicates that the membership of JSC was not constituted or appointed properly. It said that such an organ plays a crucial role in dispensing the rule of law and justice to every person and organization in the country.
Specifically, the alliance mentioned the cabinet meeting of July 30, 2020 under the newly appointed Acting Prime Minister Mahdi M. Gulaid. In that meeting, the cabinet approved the composition of SPA’s Board of Directors and five independent members joining JSC.
The alliance said the government was free to continue running its day-to-day activities. However, it stated that the government lacks moral and legal basis for appointing senior officials of JSC or SPA.
