The dialogue that was taking place in Mogadishu between Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble and opposition politicians has collapsed.
Sources privy to the talks said that it collapsed when opposition candidates asked the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) to apologize for last week’s clashes in the capital city.
On February 19, FGS sent troops to Mogadishu to prevent anti-government demonstrations that opposition politicians had planned.
Around 20 were reportedly killed or injured in last week’s clashes.
The dialogue between the Prime Minister Roble and opposition politicians was mediated by President Ahmed Abdi Kariye Qoorqoor of Galmudug.
Traditional elders also took part in mediating the talks between the two sides.
The collapse occurred just as it emerged that the government had told opposition politicians it would not allow this week’s demonstrations to take place.
