Egypt and Djibouti have both expressed their willingness to support the newly approved African Union mission in Somalia, known as the African Union Somalia Stabilization Mission (AUSSOM).
The mission will replace the AU Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) and is planned to operate with a troop strength of just under 12,000 for up to five years.
Egypt has reaffirmed its commitment to Somalia’s unity and territorial integrity, while Djibouti, which already contributes troops to the current mission, has also shown readiness to continue its support under AUSSOM.
The two countries aim to enhance regional security and stability by contributing to the new mission’s efforts to combat terrorism, particularly against the al-Shabab militant group.
Their support will be critical as the AU transitions to AUSSOM and Somalia’s security forces take more responsibility for national security.
