FGS Proposes New Federal Administration in Awdal

LAS ANOD — The Federal Government of Somalia is advancing plans to create a new administration in the northwestern Awdal region, a move that would place the area directly under central government authority. The proposal has intensified political tensions with Somaliland, which claims jurisdiction over the territory.

Defense Minister Ahmed Moallim Fiqi indicated that the plan is currently in the development phase and involves ongoing consultations with various stakeholders, including international partners. Addressing reporters in Las Anod, Fiqi emphasized that the establishment process would align with the legal and political frameworks utilized for existing Federal Member States.

Some regional administrations have expressed concerns, warning that the initiative could introduce new security and political challenges in an already unstable area. Somaliland, which claims independence without international recognition, perceives this as an effort by Mogadishu to undermine its influence. The region has recently seen unrest in Borama, with local communities expressing grievances that the federal proposal aims to address.

The strategic port city of Zeila, situated along the Gulf of Aden, remains a focal point of the dispute. Analysts note its geopolitical significance has attracted interest from foreign nations seeking influence over crucial maritime routes, further complicating the diplomatic landscape.

The Federal Government has not yet provided a definitive timeline for implementing the proposed administration, as negotiations continue amid increasing discussions about Awdal’s future governance structure within the federation.
