Two regional states loyal to President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo have expressed their displeasure at the recent extension of his term in office.
Galmudug and HirShabelle regional states are under the leadership of President Ahmed Abdi Karie Qoorqoor and President Ali Guudlaawe respectively.
Qoorqoor and Guudlaawe are both staunch allies of Farmaajo.
Traditionally, the two regional states have been solidly behind Farmaajo.
However, they issued a statement on April 27 rejecting the recent decision to extend Farmaajo’s term in office by a further two years.
The House of Representatives voted to extend Farmaajo’s term, which expired on February 8, by two years in early April.
The decision has not gone down well with opposition politicians in Somalia.
Representatives of Somalia’s international partners have also spoken out against the move, which they call a threat to stability and peace.
In rejecting the extension, Galmudug and HirShabelle said that they would support dialogue that seeks to implement the agreement reached on September 17, 2020.
