Hundreds of Somali Migrants Return Home from Libya

Mogadishu, Somalia – Today, 165 Somali migrants who had been stranded in Libya arrived safely back in Somalia, marking another successful return under a humanitarian initiative supported by the Federal Government, the European Union, and the International Organization for Migration. Their arrival brings the total number of migrants assisted back from Libya this year to nearly 557, reflecting ongoing efforts to provide safe pathways for vulnerable Somalis abroad.

These migrants, many of whom had endured months of uncertainty and hardship, were supported through IOM’s Voluntary Humanitarian Return programme. The initiative, funded by the European Union, offers migrants a chance to return home voluntarily, with comprehensive assistance to reintegrate into their communities.

Officials coordinating the operation emphasized the human dimension of the program, noting that it is not just about transportation, but also about restoring dignity and hope to families separated by migration. For many of the returnees, coming home means reuniting with loved ones and beginning the challenging process of rebuilding their lives after experiences marked by instability and displacement.

The program underscores the Somali government’s commitment to protecting its citizens abroad while working with international partners to address the root causes of irregular migration. As the year progresses, authorities hope to continue facilitating safe returns and supporting the reintegration of those who have endured the dangers of migration in search of better opportunities.

This latest group of returnees serves as a poignant reminder of the resilience of Somali migrants and the importance of coordinated international support in ensuring safe and dignified returns.
