International naval forces have received renewed authorization to fight piracy off the coast of Somalia.
The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) allowed international naval forces to continue the fight against piracy along the country’s coastal region.
On December 4, the UNSC adopted Resolution 2554 (2020) to provide the legal framework supporting the work taking place along Somalia’s coast.
The naval forces can now cooperate with the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) to fight piracy on the waters around the country for another 12 months.
UNSC voted virtually to comply with the temporary measures imposed to curb the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic in the Horn of Africa nation.
The Council voted to pass Resolution 2554 (2020) unanimously.
Piracy along Somalia’s shoreline has been a thorn in the flesh for regional authorities and international organizations that ply this route.
UNSC noted that incidences of piracy have reduced in the last 12 months because of the joint operations conducted by international naval forces.
