Mohamed Abukar Islow Duale, Somalia’s acting Minister of Security, has said it is unacceptable for elected leaders to think about extending their terms in office.
The outspoken minister has urged the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) under the leadership of President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo to hold elections on time.
Somalia is expected to hold national polls in November 2020 followed by presidential elections in February 2021.
However, the Chairperson of the National Independent Electoral Commission (NIEC), Ms. Halima Ismail, has indicated that the country might have to postpone all elections to 2021.
Opposition political parties and politicians in the country have faulted such moves saying it is part of Farmaajo’s plan to extend his term in office.
Islow said Farmaajo has the best examples of former Presidents of Somalia who held elections on time.
He mentioned President Sheikh Sharif and President Hassan Sheikh who ensured that elections were held on schedule.
Islow was one of the eight lawmakers who opposed the vote of no confidence against former Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire that the House of Representatives passed two weeks ago.
