Goobjoog Media Group’s editor, Abdiaziz Gurbiye, who was sentenced to six months in prison and slapped with a $200 fine, has been released.
His release came after the international community pressurized the government heavily.
Local human rights organizations and activists also added their voice to condemn the manner in which the government had treated Gurbiye.
The journalist was initially arrested on April 14 after publishing a post on his Facebook page, which the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) considered criminal.
Gurbiye’s arrest, detention, appearance in court, charges, and sentencing have all attracted a multitude of observers locally and internationally.
Authorities have now opted to replace his sentencing with a fine. The exact amount involved as fine has not been mentioned, though.
