Jubbaland declares Somalia in crisis, condemns federal leadership

Jubbaland’s interior minister stated on Wednesday that Somalia confronts a national crisis stemming from inadequate governance, attributing the nation’s precarious political path to federal authorities.

Addressing journalists at Kismayo airport during the arrival of delegations for a political conference, Jubbaland Interior Minister Mohamed Hussein Oogle indicated that previous hopes invested in President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud had not materialized. He noted that the anticipated direction from national leadership no longer aligns with current realities.

Oogle characterized Somalia as being in a critical juncture, marked by increasing concerns regarding violations of the provisional constitution, arbitrary policy decisions, and disregard for established legal frameworks.

He cautioned that circumstances present a significant danger to the nation’s political trajectory, especially as the constitutional mandates of various state institutions near expiration.

The minister elaborated on the objectives of the Kismayo conference, explaining its purpose involves steering Somalia’s national political direction anew. He confirmed that invitations had been extended to former national leaders and opposition figures, including former President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed, commonly known as Farmaajo.

Despite the delayed arrival of some invited dignitaries, Oogle affirmed that the organizing committee would continue receiving and hosting representatives from the federal government, regional administrations, and district levels. He identified Farmaajo as a significant opposition figure whose political perspectives maintain relevance.

Oogle anticipated the conference would yield recommendations and resolutions intended to challenge the federal government’s leadership, emphasizing Somalia’s requirement for inclusive governance that unites the populace, follows a coherent path, and operates within constitutional boundaries. He expressed optimism that the conference outcomes would help alleviate the nation’s political divisions.
