Authorities in Jubbaland released a press statement urging the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) to return the control of Gedo to the regional administration.
The regional government issued a press statement detailing the issues it wants FGS to address before elections take place in Jubbaland.
It mentioned the role its leaders played in discussing, negotiating, and signing the electoral agreement on September 17, 2020.
Jubbaland stated that elections in the region were to be held in two areas, just as is the case in all the other five Federal Member States (FMS).
Gedo was selected as one of the electoral areas in Jubbaland.
However, Gedo is currently under the control of the armed militia and the Somali National Army (SNA) troops.
Jubbaland mentioned in its letter that elections would not take place in the region unless Gedo is returned to the local administration.
With this new set of demands, it is unclear whether elections would take place in the semiautonomous region, which has opposed several electoral issues.
