Kenya Set to Reopen Border with Somalia

Reports indicate that the government of Kenya is mulling over plans to reopen its border with Somalia.

Kenyan government closed its borders with Somalia in June 2019.

However, latest reports indicate that the country is on the verge of reopening its border with its East African neighbor along Lamu.

Kenya issued several reasons for closing this section of the border. It said human traffickers, smugglers, and terrorists had used this route to enter and leave the country at will.

Irungu Macharia, Lamu’s County Commissioner, said the government has developed a plan that would lead to the reopening of the border for the benefit of traders and fishermen.

Traders and fishermen along the border have seen their operations disrupted substantially since last year.

Irungu appreciated the incredible role that fishing and tourism industries play in Lamu’s economy, which has been battered with the rapid spread of COVID-19 in the county.
