President Abdiaziz Hassan Mohamed Lafta-Gareen of Somalia’s semiautonomous state of Southwest traveled back to Baidoa on January 12.
Lafta-Gareen traveled back to the administrative capital of the southwestern state in time for elections for the Senators.
Last Saturday, Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble confirmed that elections would proceed in Benadir, Southwest, Galmudug, and HirShabelle.
His announcement came a few weeks after the Federal Elections Implementation Team (FEIT) told the nation that senatorial elections would kick off in January 2021.
Lafta-Gareen has been in Mogadishu over the last few weeks for a series of meetings with fellow Federal Member States (FMS) and Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) leaders.
Sources revealed to members of the press that Southwest is expected to be the first regional state to hold elections for candidates interested in the Upper House seats.
The President of the Southwest State met with the Council of Presidential Candidates’ Union at Decale Hotel on Monday night.
Lately, he has taken up the role of a mediator between the government, opposition presidential candidates, Puntland, and Jubbaland.
