A high-level delegation from the Federal Government of Somalia, comprising lawmakers from both houses of Parliament, ministers, and senior officials, has arrived in Las Anod, the administrative center of the SSC-Khaatumo region. This visit is a preparatory step ahead of an anticipated visit by Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre.
Las Anod has been a focal point of conflict since early 2023, following the declaration of autonomy by SSC-Khaatumo elders from Somaliland on February 6, 2023. This move led to intense clashes between Somaliland forces and local militias, resulting in significant casualties and displacement. In response, the Somali Federal Government has taken steps to assert its presence and support in the region.
The current delegation’s visit underscores the federal government’s commitment to strengthening federal presence by engaging directly with SSC-Khaatumo leaders and residents, thus reinforcing its authority and support for the region.
This visit marks a pivotal moment in the ongoing efforts to resolve the conflict in northern Somalia and could pave the way for more structured negotiations and reconciliation initiatives.
