Mogadishu Mayor Leads Security Meeting to Enhance Capital’s Safety

MOGADISHU: The Governor of Banaadir Region and Mayor of Mogadishu, Dr. Hassan Mohamed Hussein Muungaab, presided over a high-level security meeting on Saturday night aimed at intensifying measures to enhance security in the capital, improve coordination among security agencies and local administrations, and curb criminal activities that endanger public stability.

Participants discussed the implementation of the Mayor’s recent directive halting all land enforcement, eviction, and road opening activities throughout Mogadishu. Authorities highlighted the importance of maintaining coordinated security strategies to safeguard residents in the capital and neighboring regions while supporting the city’s continuous economic and infrastructure growth. Mayor Muungaab emphasized that maintaining peace and stability in Mogadishu is fundamental to the progress of both the city and the broader nation, calling on officials and security forces to redouble their commitment to protecting the public.

Attendees included the Deputy Governor for Security and Politics of Banaadir Region, Mohamed Ahmed Diriye; Banaadir Regional Police Commander, Col. Mahdi Omar Mumin; Banaadir Intelligence Commander, Col. Libaan Abdirahman Adan; Police Military Force Commander, Col. Adan Jeelle Farah; district commissioners; and local police and intelligence officials representing areas throughout Banaadir Region.

The meeting comes amid heightened political tensions and recent security incidents in Mogadishu. Forced evictions in the capital have previously sparked armed clashes between rival security factions, prompting the Mayor’s directive to halt such operations. The security gathering also follows a federal government reshuffle of security commanders in northern districts as planned opposition protests approach.

The Mayor’s call for coordinated security strategies aligns with broader federal efforts to stabilize Mogadishu. Previous high‑level security meetings have focused on improving intelligence sharing and operational coordination among agencies to prevent militant attacks and reduce crime. With President Mohamud’s term set to expire on May 15 and opposition demonstrations planned for May 10, the security meeting reflects the administration’s determination to prevent unrest and maintain order in the capital.
