The National Independent Electoral Commission (NIEC) held a meeting with representatives of various political parties in Somalia.
Ms. Halima Ismail Ibrahim, the Chairperson of NIEC, addressed the meeting, which took place in Mogadishu on Monday.
The meeting, which NIEC described as “productive,” was held to provide the political parties with a platform for sharing information and exchanging views.
Ms. Halima asked the parties that were at the meeting, which currently enjoy temporary registration, to work to transform themselves into official political parties.
She also told the gathering that NIEC had put in a lot of effort to prepare and implement the Political Parties Amendment Law and other related laws.
She reminded the representatives of the parties that NIEC serves as a “technical committee.”
Further, Halima urged political parties to approach lawmakers to make the necessary changes to allow them to thrive in Somalia’s democratic space.
