Opposition candidates for next year’s presidential elections rejected the decision by the electoral commission to appoint a new chairperson.
The newly formed Council of the Presidential Candidates’ Union issued a press statement dated December 5 expressing their displeasure with the electoral commission’s decision.
According to the candidates, the electoral commission is an “unconstitutional” body.
The Federal Government of Somalia recently appointed members for the electoral commission.
Opposition politicians have constantly urged the government to revoke the appointment of members to the commission.
They accuse the government of filling the commission with National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) officers and civil servants.
On Saturday, they termed the decision by the commission to elect their chairperson as a move designed to inspire chaos and prevent the country from holding elections.
Once again, the Council of Presidential Candidates’ Union warned President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo to prepare for the consequences of his actions.
