President Hassan Sheikh Receives Italian Interior Minister for Talks on Security and Migration

MOGADISHU – President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has received a high-level delegation from the Italian government, led by Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, at Villa Somalia for talks focused on strengthening historical ties, enhancing security cooperation, and advancing joint efforts in migration management, institutional development, and border governance.

The meeting underscored the importance both countries attach to their long-standing relationship and explored ways to deepen cooperation in areas of mutual interest. President Mohamud emphasised Somalia’s commitment to the strategic partnership with Italy, which he described as a cornerstone of efforts to rebuild state institutions, promote stability, and foster development.

Italy has been a key partner in Somalia’s security sector reform, with both governments expressing strong alignment under Italy’s Mattei Plan, a strategic framework designed to deepen partnerships with African nations through security, development, and institutional cooperation. Somalia is seen as a pivotal partner in the Horn of Africa, particularly in efforts to curb terrorism and secure crucial maritime routes.

President Mohamud has previously attended the Italy-Africa Summit in Addis Ababa, where he called for a shift from conventional aid to strategic partnership while issuing a stern rebuke against threats to Somalia’s territorial integrity. Discussions at the summit focused on the Mattei Plan, an Italian initiative designed to invest in fundamental sectors that promote sustained stability and development.

Migration and Border Management

The talks between President Mohamud and Minister Piantedosi also addressed migration management and border security, areas where Italy has been a longstanding partner. Previous high-level meetings between Somali and Italian officials have focused on migration and human trafficking concerns, with both sides agreeing to prioritise discussions on these issues and strengthen cooperation between their respective ministries.

Somalia and Italy have also explored enhanced industrial cooperation, with talks focused on realigning the long-standing bilateral relationship toward enhanced economic integration and industrial advancement. Both parties have established a framework to attract foreign investment targeting increased local manufacturing capabilities.

A Long-Standing Partnership

Italy has been one of Somalia’s most consistent international partners, particularly in the security, institutional reform, and development sectors. The two countries have deepened defence ties, with the Somali Defence Minister holding high-level meetings in Rome to discuss expanding collaboration in maritime security, counter-terrorism operations, military training, and the professionalisation of the Somali National Armed Forces.

The Somali Army Commander has also held talks with the Italian Defense Attaché to boost military ties, reinforcing Italy’s position as a cornerstone partner in Somalia’s broader security sector reform and its ongoing transition toward assuming full national security responsibilities.

Way Forward

The meeting between President Mohamud and Minister Piantedosi reflects the continued importance of the bilateral relationship as Somalia works to strengthen its institutions, improve security, and advance its development agenda. As Somalia continues its transition toward full security responsibility, Italy’s backing remains a critical pillar in its path toward self-reliance and lasting stability.
