Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble has reiterated his commitment and that of the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) to protect journalists in Somalia.
Roble reaffirmed the commitment on November 2 during the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists.
The Prime Minister’s assurances are crucial considering the reputation that Somalia has as one of the worst places for journalists to work.
The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) published a statement on Monday showing that over 70 journalists have been killed in Somalia since 1992.
Roble assured journalists that the new administration would not only “protect” but also “enable the press to operate freely and independently.”
He also commended the country’s journalists for their vibrancy in the face of difficult working conditions.
