Puntland Regional Parliament Extends Term by One More Year

The Puntland Regional Parliament has voted to extend its term by one more year.

Members of the regional parliament voted on the matter on Thursday.

The term extension came a day after President Said Abdullahi Deni agreed to the requests by the opposition to hold presidential elections using the indirect method.

Under this method, clan elders would elect or select parliamentarians who would then elect the region’s new President.

It is not clear whether members of the opposition would agree to this extension.

For months, they were against the attempt by President Deni to extend his term in office.
